Why High-Altitude Experience Matters for Your Boiler

Boilers operate differently at high elevations. As elevation increases, the air becomes less dense, meaning there is less oxygen available for combustion. Because of this, a boiler installed in Summit County may not produce the same heating capacity listed for that unit at sea level. The equipment must be properly selected, sized and commissioned for the home’s elevation.
“Derating” accounts for the reduction in a boiler’s available input and output at higher elevations. The exact amount varies by boiler model and manufacturer, which is why installers must follow the specifications for the equipment being installed. A boiler that looks adequately sized on paper may not provide enough usable heat after the required altitude derating is considered. This can leave the system struggling to heat the home or recover domestic hot water during the coldest days of the year.
